Acorn Room

Hello and welcome to the Acorns Section of our website! My name is Mrs. Meharg, and I am the teacher within our Social and Communication Class at Lislagan Primary School, alongside Lauren our classroom assistant. Together, we bring experience, enthusiasm, and a passion for supporting every child to thrive.

We are excited to be based in our newly refurbished Acorn Room, a warm, welcoming, and well-resourced space designed to meet the range of needs. Also we have access to a dedicated sensory room, which provides a safe, calming environment where children can regulate their emotions and engage in sensory experiences.

Our class focuses on developing communication skills, social interaction, and independence, while ensuring that every learner feels valued, included, and supported. We follow a fun and engaging timetable that is carefully planned to meet the individual needs of each child, helping them build confidence and a love for learning.

Throughout the week, we explore core vocabulary words and learn Makaton to support communication. We also use approaches such as Attention Autism and Circle Time to build focus, encourage interaction and develop key social skills. Communication programmes are encouraged and integrated into our daily routines, ensuring that every child has the tools to express themselves and be understood.

Over the school year, we cover a range of exciting, child-led topics designed to encourage curiosity, promote creativity, and make learning meaningful. At Lislagan Primary, we believe that learning should be enjoyable, purposeful, and lifelong.

We also value inclusion and provide regular opportunities for children to join play sessions with peers across the school, helping them build friendships, develop confidence and feel part of the school community.
